The Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) prevented Ricardo Salinas Pliego from imposing limits and additional internet charges, following outrage on X.
Totalplay reversed course after Profeco took up the issue, receiving an avalanche of complaints on social media.
The company had announced monthly data limits and additional charges of 110 pesos for every 100 GB exceeded starting April 15, 2025, which would have meant unilaterally modifying existing contracts.
This sparked outrage, as many customers signed up for the service under the premise of unlimited internet.
Profeco stated that, according to the Federal Consumer Protection Law, no provider may alter the agreed-upon terms without the express consent of users.
Following a meeting with Totalplay, Profeco required the company not to implement the new consumer plan until it obtained explicit approval from each customer and to maintain the original contracts for those who do not accept the change, thus ensuring that consumer rights are not violated.
