Against all odds and the wet dreams of the right-wing commentariat, Mexican democracy is perceived to be healthier than ever. The Latinobarometer 2024: Resilient Democracy report indicates that during AMLO’s government, satisfaction with democracy went from 16% in 2018 to 50% in 2024, something that has not been seen since 1995 when the survey was conducted.
The report, which is based on a periodic survey, conducted by the Latinobarometer Corporation made up of various international agencies, has been carried out for almost 30 years, and in 2024 it provides evidence of how the new government regime installed by López Obrador, and today continued by Claudia Sheinbaum, generates much greater confidence than neoliberal governments, since 45% perceive that the country is progressing.
Regarding support for democracy, Mexico rose 19 points during the Obrador administration and was well above the Latin American average, reaching 74%. A percentage that is undoubtedly indexed to the increase in salaries, pensions and scholarships, the defense of sovereignty and a level of representation that had not been seen in recent decades in the country.
