“We are not going to cover for anyone. There is a crime, and if anyone is involved in this crime, action will be taken,” said President Claudia Sheinbaum as she reaffirmed her government’s fight against huachicol and fiscal huachicol related to the sale of illegal gasoline and diesel in Mexico.
Although the investigations, led by Secretary Omar García Harfuch, have not yet revealed the names of officials, the President indicated that there are alleged individuals involved in protecting and colluding with organized crime groups.
These are two sources of income that have benefited the political class of all parties and, consequently, have deep ties with Morena, with serious accusations against governors and their leaders.
For the President, this is a burden she can begin to shake off with the help of super-cop Harfuch, although politically it could mean a break with part of the Morena political class that has supported her, so it seems complicated to truly get to the bottom of the investigations.
Morena’s failure in Durango and Veracruz is another wake-up call she will have to consider for the midterm elections. There is an ongoing battle that could have fuel theft as an aspect of internal political confrontation.
We don’t know how far it will go, but it could mean a rift that initially undermines the president’s power, although in the long term it could consolidate her influence with the people.
